Didn’t get home until 6:30am again. However, I did manage to accomplish more work than I had all week. I started the week with just one Solaris upgrade and one HP-based upgrade. By last night I was able to upgrade two Solaris boxes (eight applications per box, one in St. Louis and one in KC) and four HP units (three apps per box, two boxes in STL and two in KC). Tonight, therefore should be relatively easy with only one Solaris box and two HP boxes. (all in KC)

Have you seen that Ford Windstar commercial where the kids in the back are all wearing headphones and watching cartoons? The man in the passenger seat is queitly humming a tune. Listen the next time the commercial is on and see if you recognize it. Why? It was the song in my head this morning. I’ll give you a hint: I wrote about it in last month’s journal.

Speaking of last month’s journal, praise be to Emacs! One of the many splendid things this crafty bit of code does is automatically make back-ups of files that are currently being edited. Although I had inadvertently destroyed the file for my March journal entries, and there were no copies in any of my systems’ cache, Emacs had very neatly squirreled away a copy that I was able to transfer back up to this server! Thus, March has been restored!

The song in my head this morning was by Dido. I don’t recall the title of it but it’s pretty much the only song of hers getting any airplay. I forgot to mention that yesterday’s song was Matchbox 20’s “3 AM”. The significance of these two? Hmm… I don’t know.

Class went pretty well this evening… Tonight was the second of three tests for the class. It focused mostly on 19th century vocal compositions, i.e. the Operas of Wagner, Puccini, Verdi et al.

Due to a clerical error on my part, it seems that I have lost the entire month of march. While updating to april, it seems that I inadvertently deleted the march entries. I thought that I could recover them from cache off of one of my machines, but I have had no luck. After searching through all of the cache files, I am march-less.

Once again I am back working nights- at least through Wednesday night. The software upgrades for the HP machines I’ve inherited are a bit trickier than what I’m used to on Solaris. I can upgrade all of the applicable software on one of my Solaris boxes in less than half an hour. Last night, it took nearly four and a half hours to upgrade just one set of software tools on the HP. (most of that was due to lack of experience- I managed to finish the second HP from last night in just under two hours tonight) Two more HP’s and one Sun box to upgrade tonight.

“The Volcano Song” by Jimmy Buffet. That was what was playing in my head when I woke up. Of course, my new boss (that would be my new new boss) and his boss (my old new boss) will be in town today, so draw your own conclusions as to why that particular song was playing in my head.

Well, I met with my old new boss and my new new boss and guess what? I now have a new new new boss. That’s right, my old new new boss has decided to segregate things further and placed one of his own people in charge of my group. (which now consists of admins across a five state region.) So just to keep this straight, in the past week I have reported to my old old new boss, my old new new boss and now I report to my new new new boss. Got that? (I guess the song in my head was actually appropriate for the day!)

Songs in My Head

I think I may start posting a daily (yeah I know- “daily” hasn’t exactly been in my vocabulary lately) “Song in My Head”. Every morning I wake up with a different song going through my mind. I usually don’t realize what it is until I’m in the shower, and I can’t get rid of it until I listen to something else. Usually, I can tell where it came from (i.e. I heard it the day before or something) but sometimes it’s a complete mystery. Yesterday was “Jesse’s Girl” by Rick Springfield. Yech. I am not a fan. Today was “Fiction (Dreams in Digital)” by Orgy. Very cool. Obvious connection: I bought the CD two days before and have been listening to it off and on. Let’s see what I’m listening to in my head tomorrow…

Faith’s little red Ford Aspire that served us so well is no longer with us. We have traded it in on a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. Wow! what a difference! Talk about roomy! If I come across a picture of what it looks like, I will link to it later.

I finished painting the twin’s nursery a nice yellow. The Winnie-the-Pooh border went up very easily and looks great! The carpet gets replaced next, and then we can start moving the baby furniture into the room.

The three big trees in the backyard have finally been removed. The nematoads took the first one last summer, and they made great inroads into the other two so we called OMNI tree service and had them removed before they fell onto our neighbor’s house. I think it actually improved the look of the backyard. It appears much cleaner and brighter.

I have finally received a call from my boss. That’s right, nearly two months working for him and he finally decides to call me. I didn’t have to call him first, there were no catastrophes that he needed to be involved with, he just called me. What did he say? He says “It’s been great, but you now have a new boss.” So he finally calls only to let me know that I will be reporting to someone else. This is actually extremely good news. The person I will be reporting to (who lives in Little Rock) is a very intelligent person that I am sure to learn a great deal from!
