Well I guess it had to happen sooner or later, I missed a day on the updates. I hope to get in one more update tomorrow, then there will be a dry spell until next weekend when I will try to post my journal from notes taken on my Newton while we are in Orlando. The last day and a half have been extremely busy. I have finally been cubiclized. It may not be so bad after a while, but it sure is noisy! (and cramped!!) I moved the last of my equipment into the cube today and setup all my network connections, dial tone and various other sundry connections.

I reread my previous entries finally. I think there is too much fluff, not enough substance. Although I do wish this to be a record of day to day events, I also should use this space (and this time) to flesh out some of my philosophies and mind-meanderings. With that in mind I have started a few different discourses on various subjects that perhaps I will publish here if they manage to mature to a suitable form. In the meantime, I will attempt to spatter these pages with a bit or two from the gray matter!

Spent the afternoon with Faith’s parents to celebrate her father’s birthday (which is actually on the fifth) and then went to Bluebird park to watch the fireworks. We found a really great place to sit just off to the side of the main hill. The live music was a nice way to pass the time while we waited for the display. Just before the fireworks, a young lady came out and sang “God Bless America” and “The Star Spangled Banner”. Not only was this the best these two songs have sounded to me since Kate Smith, but the whole crowd actually sang along! Very moving! After the fireworks we were walking back to the car when the band (Sh-Boom) came back on stage and started into an amazing version of Queen’s “We are the Champions” followed by Dr Hook’s “Cover of the Rolling Stone” So we stayed a bit longer than we should have to enjoy the music, and a good time was had by all!

Perhaps my promotion is getting closer… today I had to interview for my own job. I really do enjoy these corporate games!

I had to drive downtown today because the Bay Networks NTS (a 72 port term server) locked up when I rebooted it remotely. I had to change a parameter to allow external access (i.e. telnet to one of the connected ports) and in order to make the change effective, it needed a reboot. Instead of simply reloading the rom image, it panicked and didn’t know what to load! (This is roughly the same problem that happened two weeks ago in KC). Of course when it did try to reboot, it attempted to load the wrong O/S version (oper.42.enet instead of oper.46.enet) There must be a setting on the OMP that gives it this misleading information, since that O/S isn’t even loaded in the roms.

I was finally able to get fetchmail working with our exchange server. Turns out that a) the I.S. dept changed the name of our server without telling anyone, and b) the server isn’t listed in DNS so even after I figured out the new name, I still couldn’t resolve it until I used the IP address. (now if I can only figure out where fetchmail put my messages…) ::smile::

Stayed up way too late last night surfing for Newton stuff. I think I am going to bring it on the trip to Orlando next week and attempt to keep my journal in the notes section until we return. Then hopefully, I will be able to move them to this page. We finally moved the good couches upstairs today. We bought two really cool tables (one is a coffee table and the other is an end table) from World Market last week that match our couches! (This is a milestone in a marriage, by the way- when some of your furniture actually starts to match!) The tables are display tables, meaning that they open up and have glass panels on the top so that you can display stuff inside them.

OK, this cgi stuff is really starting to irk me!!! All I want is a simple cgi that logs people who access my pages. Simple, right? I must be doing something wrong! The script just rights environment variables to a log file.

I call it from the web page with <script language=”Javascript” location=”log.cgi”></script> and everything works just fine. That is if your running IE or Netscape 6. I have been informed that Netscape 4ish produces a neat little error! I now have four different browsers loaded so that I can test my code!

Hrmph. Until I can find a better way, I will just snarf the info from the server logs. I believe in a simple web page, viewable by all! No applets, no heavy graphics, just plain, simple, efficient, quick loading text!
